Delhi Gate and Market, Lahore
Delhi Gate, a historic gateway in Lahore, is one of the cherished remnants of the Walled City of Lahore, a testament to the city's rich history. This magnificent gate, along with the neighboring Shahi Hammam, underwent extensive restoration in 2015.
Originally, Delhi Gate formed a part of the protective fortifications surrounding Lahore, which were dismantled by the British following the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857. Even the gate itself did not escape this fate, falling victim to British demolition. However, during the 19th century, under the British Raj, the gate was painstakingly reconstructed.
After the Partition of British India, Delhi Gate found a new purpose as it became the home of a girls' school. Its historical significance transcended time and even made its way into Rudyard Kipling's 1891 short story, "The City of Dreadful Night."
Delhi Gate once boasted a bustling marketplace with room for ten to twelve shops within its two-story structure. Visitors could ascend to its rooftop via a staircase, offering a unique perspective of the surrounding area.
The gate serves as a passageway to a vibrant bazaar, leading to the renowned Wazir Khan Mosque and further on to Shah Alam Market and Suha Bazaar. Adjacent to Delhi Gate, you'll find the famous spice market known as Akbari Mandi.
