Delhi National Zoological Park, Delhi

The National Zoological Park in Delhi, located near the historic Old Fort or Purana Qila, serves as a natural habitat for over 2,000 species of animals and birds. This park was designed by Major Weinmen of Sri Lanka and Carl Cagenbeck of Germany and has been in existence since 1959.

Covering an expansive area of 214 acres, the zoo is a popular destination for family picnics. Children particularly enjoy observing the various animals, including chimpanzees, Gir lions, Spider monkeys, and more. The aviary houses beautiful birds such as peafowl, emus, macaques, and fallow deer. Additionally, the zoo boasts a reptile house where a diverse range of snakes, including pythons and King Cobras, can be found. Within the park, you'll encounter more than 200 varieties of trees, some noteworthy examples being drought-resistant Lahura trees and the striking deep yellow alamtas.

The National Zoological Park, Delhi, plays a crucial role in conservation through its breeding programs for animals like the Bengal tiger, Asiatic lion, red jungle fowl, brow-antlered deer, and Indian rhinoceros. To cater to visitors' needs, the zoo provides various facilities such as mobile vans, drinking water points, resting parks, and a cafeteria. While the zoo is open on most days, it remains closed on Mondays. Additionally, the authorities organize marathons to raise awareness among people about the significance of wildlife preservation.
