Design Museum Gent, Ghent
Design Museum Gent, located in the heart of Ghent, is renowned for its international collection of design objects. The museum complex blends an 18th-century mansion with a modern wing, reflecting its dedication to both historical and contemporary design. Established in 1903 by the Union of Industrial and Decorative Arts, a group of industrial design and art enthusiasts, the museum originally showcased a collection of furniture, ceramics, metalwork, and textiles at the Ghent municipal academy.
As the collection expanded, notably through acquisitions following the 1913 Ghent World Exhibition, the museum relocated to Hotel de Coninck in 1922. Under the leadership of director Adelbert Van de Walle in the 1950s, the museum played a pivotal role in promoting modern design and local manufacturers through the National Salons for Modern Social Furniture. Despite facing financial difficulties, the museum was taken over by the city of Ghent in 1958, leading to renovations and a significant expansion in 1992 with a new wing designed by architect Willy Verstraete.
Today, Design Museum Gent emphasizes Belgian design from 1970 onwards, while its collection ranges from 17th and 18th-century applied arts to modern and contemporary design from 1860 to the present. The museum adopts a broad definition of design, focusing on criteria such as contemporaneity, innovation, ergonomics, durability, and aesthetic relevance. It values both mass-produced and unique objects, with innovation encompassing form, function, material, and production techniques. The museum’s acquisitions and exhibitions are primarily centered on 20th-century and contemporary designs, highlighting its commitment to showcasing evolving trends in the design world.
