Disgusting Food Museum, Malmo
The Disgusting Food Museum in Malmö is an unconventional museum dedicated to challenging our perceptions of what makes food edible or revolting. Initially launched at Slagthuset MMX in 2018, the museum relocated to its current venue at Södra Förstadsgatan 2 in the summer of 2021. With a collection of around 80 of the world’s most bizarre and stomach-turning dishes, this unique exhibition is not for the faint-hearted.
The museum invites visitors on a sensory journey around the globe, exploring foods like Peru’s roasted guinea pig, Sardinia’s maggot-infused Casu marzu cheese, and Sweden’s infamous surströmming—a fermented herring known for its powerful odor. Each item is carefully presented with detailed descriptions explaining its cultural significance, preparation, and how it’s enjoyed in its place of origin.
The Disgusting Food Museum also delves into the ethics and sustainability of food consumption. For instance, pork is included not for its taste or smell, but as a critique of industrial farming practices. Even common Western favorites like root beer and Jell-O salads make an appearance, highlighting the subjectivity of disgust—root beer, for example, is adored in North America but often reviled in Europe for its medicinal taste.
The museum doesn’t just cater to the eyes and mind; it also engages the nose and taste buds. Visitors are encouraged to confront their preconceptions by smelling and, if they dare, tasting select items from the exhibit. By challenging these culinary taboos, the museum hopes to open up conversations about our food choices and potentially help us embrace more sustainable options in the future.
