Donbækhusene (Donbæk Houses), Aarhus
The Donbæk Houses, situated in the southern region of the Memorial Park (Mindeparken) in Aarhus, have a rich historical background dating back to their initial construction phases in 1828 and 1850. These houses originally functioned as residences for the servants of the baron of Marselisborg Manor. Over the years, their use transitioned to accommodate forest workers in the Marselisborg Forests, reflecting their integral role in the local community's daily workings.
Despite their proximity to Marselisborg Palace, the Donbæk Houses have no direct historical ties to the palace, contrary to popular belief. Instead, their association was primarily with Marselisborg Manor, which no longer exists, as it was replaced by Marselisborg Gymnasium after succumbing to multiple fires in the early 20th century.
In 1996, the original structures of the Donbæk Houses were destroyed by fire. However, recognizing their historical significance, the Municipality of Aarhus took measures to rebuild these houses in their original style. This restoration effort not only preserved their architectural essence but also maintained their historical narrative within the community.
Today, the Donbæk Houses stand as a testament to the historical evolution of servant housing and labor accommodation in Aarhus, while also serving as a cultural landmark within the scenic and historically rich area of the Mindeparken, a notable memorial park and recreational space adjacent to Marselisborg Palace.
