Dongbaekseom (Camellia Island), Busan
Camellia Island is a captivating natural oasis. Designated as a monument of Busan on March 9, 1999, this scenic island offers visitors a serene retreat where ocean views, lush forests, and natural beauty converge. A well-designed walking path encircles the island, offering a delightful 45-minute stroll that allows visitors to immerse themselves in the island's tranquil ambiance.
One of the island's attractions is the Mermaid Statue, sculpted based on the myth of Princess Hwangok, as recorded in Samguk yusa (Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms). Princess Hwangok, a figure from ancient Korean history, found solace in looking out to the night sea illuminated by the full moon while living far from her homeland. The Mermaid Statue, initially installed in 1974 and later damaged in the 1987 typhoon, was subsequently restored in 1989. The statue beautifully captures the essence of the myth, adding a touch of cultural richness to Dongbaekseom.
Continuing along the island's coastal path, visitors will encounter a Suspension Bridge that offers panoramic views of the ocean below. Despite its height, the bridge is designed to be safe for individuals with a fear of heights, including children. The coastal trail leads to a white lighthouse and a spacious observatory with breathtaking views of the Nurimaru APEC House.
The Nurimaru APEC House hosted the Busan APEC Summit in 2005. The modern exterior of the APEC House harmonizes with the stunning view of Haeundae, making it a unique international meeting place. Visitors can explore the main meeting room, where the circular formation of chairs used by Asian and Pacific leaders during the summit is on display, along with meals and gifts from the event.
Dongbaekseom Island offers a genuine experience of the ocean, forest, and nature in their natural state. As the name suggests, camellias burst into bloom across the island from winter to spring, adding vibrant splashes of color to the lush landscape.
