Dover College, Dover
Nestled in the historic town of Dover in southeast England, Dover College is an independent day and boarding school steeped in tradition. Founded in 1871, the college reflects the classic English public school ethos while welcoming both local and international students. It is a co-educational institution, offering education for day pupils and boarders alike.
The school occupies a unique and picturesque setting within the medieval remains of Dover Priory, a site with roots tracing back to the Priory of Saint Martin. This priory was dismantled during the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII, leaving behind historic ruins that now form part of the school’s distinctive campus. Dover College is situated adjacent to Dover Priory railway station, named after the original monastery.
Some of the medieval structures have been preserved, including a large hall that was repurposed in 1879 to serve as the school chapel, complete with an extended east end forming an apse. Over time, the property was entrusted to the College Trustees by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, solidifying its place as a cornerstone of Dover’s architectural and educational heritage.
Dover College opened on 15 September 1871 as a boys' school with 21 pupils in its inaugural term. By the following summer, the school’s population had grown to include 32 additional students. Founded with vision and purpose, it has since expanded to become a vibrant institution known for its blend of academic excellence and historic charm.
The school’s coat of arms honors Saint Martin of Tours, France’s patron saint, depicting him sharing his cloak with a beggar as a symbol of generosity. Dover College continues to inspire students through its fusion of historical legacy and modern education, offering a truly unique learning environment enriched by centuries of history.
