Eglise Saint-Pierre (Saint Peter's Church), Calais
Saint Peter's Church, also known as the Church of Saint-Pierre de Calais, was constructed between 1960 and 1962 under the guidance of local architect Georges Wiart. Built in the neo-Gothic architectural style, it takes the form of a Latin cross, characterized by a dignified yet refined silhouette.
The church's imposing bell tower, soaring to a height of 65 meters, draws inspiration from the design of the Saint-Pierre de Caen tower, which in turn echoes the Kresker tower replicated across Brittany.
The decision to erect a new place of worship stemmed from the deteriorating state of the old church situated on Quai du Commerce, prompting the initiation of the project at the end of Place Crèvecoeur. Designed by Emile Boeswillwald, a protege of Viollet-le-Duc, the church embodies both historical reverence and architectural innovation.
Destroyed during the bombings of 1944 and subsequently demolished in 1953, the original church of Saint-Pierre in Calais was resurrected on the same site through the financial support of war reparations.
