Eiffel Building, Maastricht

The Eiffel Building, also known as The Eiffel, is an industrial monument in the center of the Dutch city of Maastricht . The ensemble of three linked factory buildings was created between 1928 and 1941, was part of the Koninklijke Sphinx sanitary factory until 2006 and since 2017 has housed, among other things, a branch of The Student Hotel. The iconic building on Boschstraat in the Statenkwartier neighborhood has been a national monument since 1996.

The three buildings that together form The Eiffel are located at a distance of approximately 20 meters from the building line of the Boschstraat. Due to its height and length, the building complex in the style of the new professionalism dominates both the Boschstraat and the Bassin . The factory building was constructed in three phases. The original building (Eiffel I) was first extended in a southerly direction (Eiffel II), then in a northerly direction (Eiffel III). The entire building is approximately 180 meters long, 21 meters wide and 33 meters high and has a floor area of 33,500 m². The building was whitewashed in the 1940s.

The former sanitary factory has a rectangular floor plan and is built parallel to Boschstraat. The eight-storey building has a basement and is covered by a flat roof with three superstructures. A water reservoir is located in the larger central superstructure ; the elevator shafts in the two smaller buildings. Eiffel I and II have a similar concrete skeleton structure of reinforced concrete (with concrete floor slabs, mushroom concrete columns and beams). The northern volume Eiffel III, built later, has a steel structure. The outer facade fields are filled in with cement stone. During the recent renovation, the outer facades of Eiffel III on the ground floor were partly removed, creating an underpass under the building. The front and rear facades are strongly horizontally oriented by the 38 window axes (13 + 13 + 12; Eiffel III is therefore slightly shorter). The side walls on the north side each have three window axes and are therefore strongly vertically accentuated.
