El Viejo Almacen, Buenos Aires

Located in the heart of the San Telmo district, El Viejo Almacén proudly stands as one of Buenos Aires' most cherished tango clubs, steeped in tradition. What once served as an aged campaign warehouse has been transformed into a restaurant offering a diverse array of international à la carte cuisine. With an extensive assortment of wines and an exceptional tango performance, it's a destination that captivates the senses.

The historical significance of this suburban locale harks back to the days of the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata, its foundations laid in the year 1769. This venue was an 1840s warehouse. In June 1844, it marked a medical milestone with the first use of ether anesthesia for surgery in Buenos Aires. In the 1850s and 1860s, it housed the General Customs of the Nation. It also sheltered wounded soldiers during the Paraguayan War (1865-1868).

In 1969, the renowned tango vocalist Edmundo Rivero acquired the establishment, imbuing it with new life as one of the city's paramount tango venues. The Honorable Deliberative Council of Buenos Aires designated it a Cultural Interest Site in 1982, acknowledging its cultural significance.

Numerous renowned artists, including Aníbal Troilo, Osvaldo Pugliese, Roberto Goyeneche, and more, have performed on its stages. Besides being a tango hub, this space fosters various cultural forms, hosting events like the decade-long Open Poetry cycle and being a venue for book launches and meetings with institutions like Academia Porteña del Lunfardo.
