Emily Carr University of Art and Design, Vancouver

Emily Carr University (ECU) is a leading public art university in Vancouver. It is located at the Great Northern Way Campus in Strathcona. ECU has four faculties: Culture + Community, Design + Dynamic Media, Art, and Graduate Studies. Emily Carr University holds the distinction of being one of British Columbia's oldest tertiary institutions, singularly dedicated to fostering professional expertise and knowledge in the realms of arts, media, and design.

With origins dating back to 1925 as the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts, this institution went through several name changes. It became the Vancouver School of Art in 1933 and later transformed into the Emily Carr College of Art and Design in 1978. In 1995, it adopted the name Emily Carr Institute of Art + Design. A major milestone was achieved in 1994 when the university gained degree-conferring authority. It introduced graduate programs in 2003 and obtained specialized teaching university status in 2008 under the provincial University Act.

The modern university campus is housed in a striking four-story building designed by Diamond Schmitt Architects and completed by EllisDon in 2017. It includes informal gathering spaces, studios, exhibition areas, and three lecture theatres, with a notable 400-seat venue. The exterior features white metal panels and glass elements that resemble a pristine canvas, complemented by back-painted glass spandrel panels that evoke an artistic color palette. The design also integrates First Nations elements, enhancing its essence.
