Emmaus Nicopolis, Jerusalem
Emmaus Nicopolis, also known as Hammat, was a significant city that thrived from the Hellenistic period through the Byzantine era. Situated in the plains of Judea near the hilltop of Latrun, approximately 10 miles (14 kilometers) west of the outskirts of Jerusalem, it holds historical and religious importance. According to the Gospel of Luke, it was at Emmaus where Jesus appeared to his disciples after his resurrection, breaking bread with them.
Throughout its history, the area has been a strategic location, mentioned in writings dating back to the 2nd century BCE. It witnessed numerous conflicts and changes of control among various religious groups. During the six-day war, Israel gained control of the area, leading to its transformation into Canada Park, thanks to significant contributions from Canadian Jewish organizations.
Despite the transformation, remnants of Emmaus Nicopolis still endure. The footprint of the 12th-century Crusaders Basilica stands atop a Byzantine church from the 5th century. Nearby, a well-preserved Roman bath structure offers insight into the city's ancient infrastructure.
The valley of the springs, which once provided water to the city, remains a focal point of Canada Park. Visitors can explore the ruins of old wine presses, a cruciform baptistery, and other remnants of the ancient city. There are also some great views of the countryside, and it is easy to see why this area was so contested in times gone by.
