Energy and Technology Museum, Vilnius
The Energy and Technology Museum in Vilnius is a fascinating institution that showcases the energy history of Lithuania, the industrial heritage of the country, and the history of the city of Vilnius. The museum is housed in a former power plant that was opened in 1903, and it still holds the old power plant equipment, including steam turbines, generators, steam boilers, water pumps, pipelines, and a control panel. With its expansive 5,000 square meters, it is the largest museum of technology in Lithuania.
The museum features interactive rooms that are mainly designed for children and have interactive exhibits illustrating different aspects of science. Visitors can experience the authentic equipment of a recently operational power plant and take a stroll around steam boilers, turbines, generators, condensers, and sophisticated pipelines, allowing them to experience the spirit of this type of industrial facility.
The energy exhibition has been expanded to include wind and solar power plants that operate on the roof of the museum, presenting visitors with an increasingly more important alternative source of energy every day. The energy exposition is supplemented by information terminals and existing models of Kruonis Pumped Storage and Ignalina Nuclear Power Plants, providing a comprehensive overview of energy production in Lithuania.
One of the unique aspects of the Energy and Technology Museum is that it is not a traditional museum, and the first central power station in Vilnius attracts the attention of passers-by more than ever. It destroys established stereotypes of a typical museum and offers an immersive and interactive experience.
Visitors can enhance their experience by accessing the museum's website and listening to the audio guide straight from their smartphones. The audio guide recordings are available in Lithuanian, English, Russian, and Polish, providing visitors with a closer look at the exhibits at the Energy and Technology Museum.
