Església de Sant Nicolau (Church of Saint Nicolas), Palma de Mallorca

The parish of Sant Nicolau in Palma de Mallorca emerged in 1302, following the intramural territorial demarcation of the neighboring Santa Eulalia parish – divided in two. That same year, the first church of Saint Nicolás was erected, only to be rebuilt shortly afterwards (1309-1349).

In the late 15th century, the church had to be restored after its nave had collapsed. The main façade (with a typical Catalan Gothic layout: square and flanked by two octagonal towers) and the two portals (major and lateral, attributed to Francesc Sagrera) date from that period. Similarly is the main Gothic altarpiece with paintings of Saint Nicholas (by Miquel d'Alcanyís) and San Magin.

In 1681, another important restoration took place, this time completely changing the apse, roof and decorations. At the end of the 17th century, the bell tower was added, and in the early years of the 18th century the apse was rebuilt in the shape of a shell.

In the early 19th century, the two towers of the main façade were crowned in the classicist tradition. Still, the neo-Gothic style, typical of the 19th century, came into view courtesy of the versatile D. Joan Miquel Sureda y Verí, count of Peralada, who, from 1894 to 1898, enriched the design with the "colonelles" windows of the tribunes, located at the front of the temple, the rose window on the main façade, decorated with colorful stained glass from the Casa Amigó, and the pediment that complements the façade with a cresting of fleurs-de-lis.

In 2020, the parish vestibules were restored, upon which the Holy Week of 2021 was observed once again.
