Estadio El Campín (El Campin Stadium), Bogota

The El Campin Stadium, commonly referred to as El Campin, is the principal stadium in Bogota. Inaugurated on August 10, 1938, the stadium has a seating capacity of 39,512 spectators and serves as the home ground for Millonarios and Santa Fe, two prominent teams in Colombia’s Categoria Primera A league.

The stadium is named after Nemesio Camacho, who managed Bogotá's streetcar system and was the father of Luis Camacho Matiz, the individual who donated the land for the stadium’s construction. The name "Campin" is derived from the English word "camping," reflecting the area’s history as a camping zone before its development.

The idea to construct the stadium was proposed in 1934 by Jorge Eliecer Gaitan, then-mayor of Bogota, as part of the city's 400th-anniversary celebrations and to host the 1938 Bolivarian Games. Before El Campin’s opening, Bogota’s major football games were held at the smaller La Merced ground.

Initially, the stadium had a capacity of 23,500, which expanded to 62,500 by 1968 due to various renovations. Over time, modifications were made to improve infrastructure and comfort, resulting in a reduced capacity of 39,512. El Campin transitioned into a football stadium in 1946, hosting its first national club tournament shortly after.

El Campin has been the home of Millonarios since its opening in 1938 and Santa Fe since 1951. It has also been a regular venue for the Colombian national football team. Despite initial concerns regarding FIFA's restrictions on high-altitude stadiums, El Campin was permitted to host international matches, ensuring its continued role in global football events.

Today, El Campin remains a symbol of Bogotá’s sports culture and a historic venue cherished by football fans across the nation.
