Estatua del Sagrado Corazon de Jesus (Statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus), Ibiza
The Statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, known locally as Sagrat Cor de Jesus, is a monumental structure made from stone, standing 23 meters tall. Positioned on a small knoll north of Ibiza Town, along the C-731 road towards Sant Antoni de Portmany, the statue serves as a significant religious and historical landmark in the area. It is located in the hamlet of Monte Cristo, adjacent to the local industrial estate.
Constructed after the Spanish Civil War, the statue marks where the old "na Ribes" flour mill once stood. Such statues were erected across Spain during the 1930s, symbolizing faith and resilience. The monument's base and pedestal were crafted by Joan Serra, a construction company from Majorca, while the on-site building was supervised by master builder Joan Costa from Ibiza. The detailed architectural design of the structure was conceived by Guillermo Moragues, and the statue of Christ was sculpted by Valencian artist Antoni Sanjuan.
This statue is reminiscent of the iconic Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, although it is 14 meters shorter. From its vantage point, visitors can enjoy stunning views of the surrounding valley, making it a popular spot not only for those seeking spiritual solace but also for those looking to appreciate the scenic beauty of Ibiza.
