Evangelisch-Lutherische Christuskirche (Evangelical Lutheran Christ Church), Potsdam

The Evangelical Lutheran Christ Church (Evangelisch-Lutherische Christuskirche) is a historically significant and architecturally notable church located in the Nauener Vorstadt district of Potsdam. The church, constructed in the early 20th century, was designed by Georg Grabkowsky, the son of court mason August Grabkowsky. The foundation stone was laid on August 24, 1902, and the church was consecrated on October 25, 1903.

The church, built in neo-Gothic style to match nearby residences, is a red brick structure with a three-axis design and a slate cross-roof. Its standout feature is the tower façade facing Behlertstraße, featuring a double gable bell tower with a tapered roof turret and finials. The corner towers have conical roofs with finials. Above the portal, a decorative arch holds a portrait of Christ with two Luther roses by painter Gerhard Haenisch. The façade also includes a rose window, designed as a blind window with tracery, behind which the church organ is housed.

The Christ Church interior is striking, with a star vault ceiling, yellow brick accents, and dark paint. The north-side polygonal apse features a high crucifix by Zechmair (1898) and a wooden gospel lectern by Wilhelm Groß (1970) with figures of Mary and John. Behind the altar, a restored curtain painting from 2015 displays a quote from the Gospel of Matthew: "Come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

Above the entrance on the south-facing side is a gallery housing one of the few remaining original pneumatic organs by Alexander Schuke. Built in 1903, the organ boasts nine stops on a manual and pedal, with its façade designed in neo-Gothic style.

Laid out at the behest of Friedrich William II in 1787, Potsdam's Neuer Garten (New Garden) was indeed "new" compared to the already in place Sanssouci Park.

Between 1816 and 1828, the area was modified further as an English-style, open landscape garden, with an aim to reproduce nature – trees and plants were left to grow naturally, unshaped and untrimmed. Rural life was also...  view more

Sanssouci Park Walking Tour

Sanssouci Park is a unique Potsdam landmark that occupies 290 hectares in the heart of the city. The Park is named after the Sanssouci Palace that it surrounds, which in turn takes its name from the French phrase "sans souci", which means carefree, and implies that the palace was designated as a place of fun, rather than a seat of power.

Indeed, the Sanssouci Palace was built in 1747...  view more
