Fairmount Park, Philadelphia

Fairmount Park, Philadelphia

Fairmount Park, situated in Philadelphia, stands as the largest municipal park in the city and a significant historical landmark. This expansive park, which spans a remarkable 2,052 acres (830 hectares), is strategically divided into two main sections by the Schuylkill River: East Park and West Park.

In the past, the Fairmount Park system included many parks across Philadelphia, like Wissahickon Valley Park, Pennypack Park, Cobbs Creek Park, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt Park, along with 58 other areas. However, after a 2010 merger, these parks are now considered separate, and the term "Fairmount Park system" is no longer officially used.

The origins of Fairmount Park date back to its establishment as Philadelphia's first park. The initial domain comprised three areas: South Park or the South Garden, Old Park, and West Park. Notably, the South Garden existed even before the Park Commission's formation in 1867, with Lemon Hill and Sedgeley joining in 1855. Following the American Civil War, efforts were focused on expanding West Park.

Among its many attractions, the park features the Schuylkill River Trail, a modern paved multi-use trail located by Kelly Drive in East Park. Additionally, the Belmont Plateau Cross Country Course, which hosted the 1923 and 1976 USA Cross Country Championships, is another highlight of Fairmount Park.

Today, Fairmount Park serves as a serene oasis amidst the urban landscape of Philadelphia. It offers a tranquil retreat with its rolling hills, gentle trails, relaxing waterfront, and shaded woodlands. The park's natural beauty is accessible to all, providing a peaceful escape in both its East and West sections, separated by the Schuylkill River.
