Faro de Botafoc (Botafoc Lighthouse), Ibiza
Botafoc Lighthouse, known locally as Faro de Botafoc, is one of the most iconic landmarks in the port of Ibiza. Located on the islet of Botafoc at the northern entrance to the port, the lighthouse celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2011, having been a guiding light for sailors since it first lit up the coast in 1861. The structure stands out with its striking 30-meter white tower, which rises majestically over the cliffs, offering breathtaking views of both the Mediterranean Sea and the old city of Ibiza, Dalt Vila.
The origins of the lighthouse’s name are tied to ancient maritime traditions. It is believed that in the past, fires were lit atop the islet to guide sailors safely to shore, thus giving it the name “Botafoc,” which can be roughly translated as “coming fire” or “sale fire.” Construction of the lighthouse began on October 18, 1859, under the supervision of contractor Andrés Roses and was completed on November 30, 1861, with the installation of a 6th-order optical lens and a fixed white light.
The lighthouse is also notable for its unique architectural design, featuring a two-floor housing structure for the lighthouse keeper, a rarity among its contemporaries due to the limited space available on the islet. It remains the last inhabited lighthouse in the Pityusic Islands, preserving a piece of maritime heritage and history.
A visit to the Botafoc Lighthouse is an ideal way to enjoy a quiet walk along Juan Carlos I Avenue, which meanders through the leisure ports of Marina Botafoch and Marina Ibiza. The route is perfect for a stroll or some outdoor exercise, providing picturesque views of the fishing boats docked in the harbor, framed by the historic backdrop of Dalt Vila.
