Fembo-Haus (City Museum), Nuremberg

Fembo-Haus (City Museum), Nuremberg

The City Museum in Nuremberg's Fembo House, the city’s sole surviving large Renaissance trading house, covers 950 years of Nuremberg's history. Originally constructed in 1420 and has served as a merchant’s house, a patrician palace, and a map publisher, Fembo House became a city museum in 1953. This was crucial after World War II destruction necessitated preserving Nuremberg’s architectural heritage.

The museum offers an immersive experience through its original rooms, such as the "Vorplatz"—a hall notable for its magnificent stucco ceiling—and other richly decorated spaces. The first floor is dedicated to the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, featuring ornate stucco work, a collection of objects made in Nuremberg, portraits of local scholars and intellectuals, and sound recordings of the city’s extensive musical history.

Visitors can explore over 30 publicly accessible rooms, each providing a unique glimpse into the domestic lives of Nuremberg’s wealthy citizens. The exhibition hall titled "Crown - Power - History" offers a condensed overview of the city’s key historical chapters through a media guide available in nine languages, designed for those with limited time.

Additionally, the museum enriches its historical narrative with various installations and audiovisual supports, enhancing the visitor’s engagement and understanding of Nuremberg's diverse past. The courtyard features an impressive 18-meter-deep well, which is also accessible to the public free of charge.

The City Museum not only serves as a repository of Nuremberg's history but also as a vivid reminder of the city's resilience and cultural legacy, making it a must-visit for both history enthusiasts and casual tourists alike.

Why You Should Visit:
If you want an interesting history of Nuremberg, this is a good place for a great (not too heavy) mix of items. The audio guide is good and you can choose what to listen to and what not.

Tip:
Being a municipal museum, for an extra €2.5, you can transform your ticket and visit any other municipal museum if you have time on the same day.

Hitler's Nuremberg Tour

Hitler's Nuremberg Tour

Despite Nuremberg's storybook appearance, the city's not so distant past is rather dark. Back in 1933, amid the rise of the Third Reich, the Nazis worked really hard to leave their stamp on the city, prettifying it and renovating the architecture in a bid to accommodate their massive rallies and bombastic military parades.

In fact, no other city in Germany is more intertwined with the...  view more

Nuremberg Old Town Walking Tour

The historical center of Nuremberg, Old Town (German: Altstadt) is easily differentiated from other parts of the city. Divided in two by the Pegnitz River, the district represents a complex architectural ensemble with a maze of historical lanes (e.g. Weissgerbergasse) packed with half-timber houses, linked by centuries-old bridges, such as Maxbrücke, and set against the picturesque backdrops of...  view more

Nuremberg Introduction Walking Tour

Nuremberg Introduction Walking Tour

The most "German" of all cities in Germany, Nuremberg has witnessed many historic events in its lifetime. Sadly, the first thing immediately associated with Nuremberg is the rise of the Third Reich, the Nazi rallies, and the postwar trials over the Nazi leaders. Indeed, the city was favored by Hitler, who planned to build here a grandiose architectural complex for his party.
