Fernsehturm Stuttgart (Stuttgart TV Tower), Stuttgart (must see)

Stuttgart TV Tower (Fernsehturm Stuttgart) stands as a pioneering structure in the field of telecommunications. Located in Stuttgart, this 216.61-meter (710.7-foot) tower holds the distinction of being the world's first telecommunications tower constructed from reinforced concrete. Completed in 1956, the tower's innovative design has set the standard globally, influencing the construction of similar towers around the world.

Positioned atop the Hoher Bopser hill in the southern Stuttgart borough of Degerloch, the tower offers breathtaking views from its observation decks. Visitors can gaze over Stuttgart, taking in the lush forests and vineyards, and extending their sights to the Swabian Jura and the Black Forest. The proximity of the Waldau-Stadion, also known as Gazi-Stadion auf der Waldau, adds a cultural footnote, being a popular venue for sports events often referenced about the tower.

The construction of the Stuttgart TV Tower faced initial skepticism due to new building materials and high costs (4.2 million DM). Despite concerns that a cheaper 200-meter antenna could suffice, construction began on January 10, 1954, and finished in 20 months. The project's success was confirmed as visitor fee revenues covered costs within five years. Officially opened on February 5, 1956, the tower also highlighted Queen Elizabeth II's 1965 state visit to Germany.

Originally, the tower broadcasted the ARD TV network's analog service, which ceased in 2006. Today, Stuttgart TV Tower only transmits to several public FM radio stations, while digital television services have been relocated to the nearby Fernmeldeturm Stuttgart. The tower is equipped with traditional red air traffic warning lights and three rotating xenon lamps similar to those found on lighthouses, positioned just above the observation deck.

Despite the initial controversy, the Stuttgart TV Tower quickly became a beloved landmark and a significant tourist attraction, symbolizing the city's innovative spirit and architectural ingenuity.
