Filmmuseum (Film Museum), Dusseldorf
The Dusseldorf Film Museum offers a sweeping journey through the world of cinema. Spanning 2,200 square meters across four floors, its permanent exhibition displays an impressive range of film artifacts, from early technical equipment and film set models to costumes, props, and animation tools, illustrating the intricate processes behind film production, distribution, and presentation. One of Germany's few film museums, it features a replica studio, an animation technology space, and rotating exhibitions on filmmakers and film's ties to art and society.
The Dusseldorf Film Museum traces its roots to 1956 when the city began a youth cultural stage focused on school films and preserving Fritz Genandt’s nitro film collection. In 1971, the Dusseldorf Film Forum boosted local film culture, leading to the Film Institute’s founding in 1979. Spearheaded by Klaus G. Jaeger, the museum opened in 1993 on Schulstrasse and has since expanded, now housing its collections in a climate-controlled facility.
Under Bernd Desinger’s directorship since 2009, the museum has embraced the concept of a "Living Film Museum," enriching its offerings with contemporary cinema history and various filmmaking aspects. Its cinema, the Black Box, operates as a municipal venue and features one of the last Welte cinema organs from 1928, adding a unique touch to silent film screenings. The Black Box also hosts culturally themed film clubs, presenting a diverse selection of films in their original languages.
The Dusseldorf Film Museum offers a rich media education program with over 30 workshops for all ages, covering themed tours and short film productions. Its collection, a treasure for film lovers, features 500,000 photographs, 25,000 posters, scripts, press materials, and estates of figures like Lotte Reiniger and Helmut Kautner. The museum also holds a unique shadow play collection with puppets from the 13th to 19th centuries, celebrating shadow performance and cinema's evolving art.

Dusseldorf Introduction Walking Tour
The area at the confluence of the Rhine and Dussel rivers was on the outskirts of the Roman Empire and settled by Germanic fishing tribes. It is from these small beginnings that the town takes its name. "Dorf" translates to "village" in English. The city of Dusseldorf has since grown far larger than that original eighth-century fishing village.

Dusseldorf's Old Beer (Altbier) Walk
Just as London has given us Porter, Dublin – Stout, Burton – the original (English) IPA, and Cologne – Kolsch, Dusseldorf has contributed to the world of beers its signature Altbier. They say, Dusseldorf and Altbier go together like onion rings and blood sausage. Curiously enough, though, this delicious, cool-fermented and malty brew, ranging in color from dark brown to copper, is not... view more
