First Church of Christ, Scientist, Boston
The world headquarters and primary place of worship for the Christian Science faith seamlessly blend tradition and modernity, as if Bernini and Le Corbusier joined forces in an architectural marriage. Here, an ancient basilica coexists harmoniously with a sleek office complex crafted by the minds of I. M. Pei & Partners and Araldo Cossutta, Associated Architects.
Mary Baker Eddy's original granite First Church of Christ, Scientist, dating back to 1894, has since found itself embraced by a domed Renaissance Revival basilica, an elegant addition to the site that made its debut in 1906. Both church structures now sit amidst the bustling offices of the Christian Science Publishing Society, the birthplace of the 'Christian Science Monitor', and Cossutta's intricate church-administration buildings, which reached completion in 1973. And if you happen to be here on a Sunday, you'll be treated to the sounds of the church's famous Aeolian-Skinner organ, with over 13,000 pipes serenading you during the services.
The center's outer beauty is accentuated by a 670-foot-long reflecting pool, elegantly trimmed with red granite. It's an inviting space, perfect for a leisurely lunch or a moment of respite. You'll also find charming small fountains and well-placed sitting areas that have received a recent makeover, enhancing the overall experience.
Tip:
Venture to the ground floor of the Mary Baker Eddy Library, nestled within the Christian Science Publishing building at 200 Massachusetts Avenue. The library's original Neoclassical lobby has undergone a remarkable transformation into the grandly named "Hall of Ideas". There, you'll encounter a captivating glass and bronze fountain that seems to cascade not only with water but also with words. And if you venture a little further, you'll find the marvelous Mapparium, a truly unique stained glass globe measuring an impressive 30 feet in diameter. You can even stroll across it on a glass bridge, which is quite the experience.
