First Church of Christ Scientist, Santa Barbara

The First Church of Christ, Scientist in Santa Barbara combines mid-century modern design with historical architectural references, resulting in a complex that reflects multiple periods and influences. The exterior features a corner entrance marked by curved lines, a red tile roof, and contrasting materials-white plaster above and bush-hammered concrete below.

The building’s layout follows a central plan anchored by a Byzantine-style dome, with subsidiary domes at the vestibules and gabled projections on all four elevations. Paired stained glass windows, Roman arches, and clustered columns introduce Romanesque and Classical elements. Arcaded walkways extend from both Santa Barbara and Valerio Streets, framing the church within a Spanish Mission-style complex that includes a central courtyard.

Inside, the sanctuary rises to a vaulted ceiling supported by exposed beams. A pipe organ, with 235 ranks and 147 speaking stops, occupies a prominent place and is noted as one of the largest in the country. The on-site Reading Room offers Christian Science literature and has been recognized by the city as a landmark of architectural interest.
