First Presbyterian Church, Memphis
The First Presbyterian Church in Memphis has a long and significant history, both in terms of its establishment and its architecture. It was founded in 1828, making it the second oldest congregation in Memphis. Since 1832, it has been located at the corner of Poplar Avenue and Third Street (now known as B.B. King), thanks to a deed from the city.
The church building we see today was constructed in 1884, replacing a previous one that was lost to a fire. This new building is a testament to the architectural skills of Edward Culliatt Jones, who drew inspiration from a church in England designed by A.W.N. Pugin. Notably, the church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, emphasizing its historical and architectural significance.
The church's tower, which was originally part of the 1884 structure, underwent significant changes in 1928. During this renovation, the upper two stages of the tower were added as we see them today. Additionally, a two-story Sunday School wing was built, expanding the church's facilities. Over the years, there were further expansions and renovations, with notable additions in 1955.
In the 1990s, the congregation experienced growth and unity through the merger of the First Presbyterian Church with Emmanuel Presbyterian Church and Frayser Trinity Presbyterian Church. This merger strengthened the church's sense of community and outreach.
In 2003, the church celebrated a significant milestone - its 175th anniversary, marking over 150 years of service, worship, and community involvement in Memphis.
