First Unitarian Church, Berkeley
The First Unitarian Church in Berkeley stands as a unique testament to architectural ingenuity and historical significance. Built in 1898, it was the work of Albert C. Schweinfurth, who introduced a distinctive approach by applying Shingle Style architecture, typically seen in homes, to a church. This unconventional design features industrial-style metal sash windows, redwood tree trunks as pillars, a strong horizontal emphasis, and a semicircular apse crowned with a conical roof. These elements make it one of the most unusual church buildings of its time.
Recognized for its historical importance, the building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the California State Historic Resources Survey, and as a City of Berkeley Landmark. Over the years, it has also served as the University Dance Studio and Bancroft Dance Studio. Although originally situated outside the university grounds, the church is now the second-oldest building on the UC Berkeley campus, following the university’s acquisition of the land in 1960 through eminent domain.
The church was a centerpiece in the social and cultural life of early Berkeley. It served as the first meeting place of the Hillside Club, established in 1898 to promote the Arts and Crafts movement. Its location once joined a cluster of Protestant churches encouraged by the university administration since the 1870s.
In 1908, the congregation expanded its facilities by constructing Unity Hall, designed by renowned architect Bernard Maybeck, a church member. However, Unity Hall was demolished in 1965 to make way for Zellerbach Hall. The original church building, however, was preserved and underwent seismic upgrades and restoration in 1999, ensuring its legacy continues.
Today, the First Unitarian Church stands as a rare and enduring example of innovative design and historical resilience in Berkeley’s rich architectural landscape.
