Fontana dell'Amenano, Catania
Fontana dell'Amenano was built in 1867 by the Neapolitan master Tito Angelini in Carrara marble, represents the Amenano river as a young man holding a cornucopia from which water comes out and pours into a tub with a rounded edge. The water, overflowing from this tub, produces a waterfall effect that gives the sensation of a sheet. Hence the Sicilian way of saying " acqua a linzolu" to indicate the fountain.
The water that falls from the pool pours into the river below, which flows at a level of about two meters below the square.
Behind the fountain, a lava stone staircase leads to the Pescheria, an ancient city market which, together with the Vucciria of Palermo, is one of the major folkloristic attractions of the two Sicilian cities.
