Fort Casoni Vecchi, Pula
Fort Casoni Vecchi, also known as Fort Monte Paradiso, is a historical fortified tower located on Belvedere Hill (Monte Paradiso) in Pula. Constructed between 1852 and 1854 by the Austrian Empire, the fort was built to safeguard the main naval port of the empire. This strategic location allowed it to serve as a critical defense point against potential sea-based assaults.
The fortress is an impressive example of mid-19th-century military architecture, utilizing materials such as concrete and steel to create a robust structure. During World War II, Fort Casoni Vecchi endured several attacks and subsequent neglect post-war. A nearby battery, associated with the fort, was demolished by German forces in 1945.
In the post-war period, the fort's military purpose faded, and it found new uses. Between 1992 and 2000, the Montepardiso Festival, a music fair, was held within its walls, bringing a cultural dimension to the site. Since 2000, the fortress has also served a practical function, housing a book warehouse for the Pula Library. Additionally, the Casoni Vecchi Association has maintained the fort since 2002.
Fort Casoni Vecchi stands as a testament to Pula’s historical and architectural heritage, reflecting the city’s strategic importance during the Austrian Empire era.
