Franciscan Church, Limerick
The Franciscan Church on Lower Henry Street in Limerick stands on the site of an older chapel from the 1820s. The foundation stone for the current church was laid by Dr. Butler, Bishop of Limerick, in May 1876. Renowned builders McCarthy and Guerin, alongside architect William Corbett, oversaw its construction, culminating in its completion in 1886. The Franciscan Church is admired for its neo-classical architecture, featuring an imposing portico, columns, and a dome. The interior boasts beautiful windows and frescoes, contributing to its historic and aesthetic significance.
The church façade features four large limestone pillars supporting an entablature and pediment, topped with statues of Saint Francis, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and Saint Anthony. Inside, granite pillars support the nave and the clerestory, which has sets of three round-headed windows and Latin hymn inscriptions. In the left aisle, a stained glass window of Saint Bernardine of Siena, the Apostle of Italy, is displayed next to a painting of Saint Francis's life, including scenes from Assisi. Additional stained glass windows honor Saint Louis of France and Saint Elizabeth of Hungary, Patroness of the Secular Franciscan Order.
Historically, the Franciscan presence in Limerick dates back to the 13th century, initially established at a friary near Sir Harry’s Mall by Thomas de Burgo. This original monastery was known as Saint Francis Abbey, influencing local names such as the Abbey River and Abbey Fishermen. During the Cromwellian conquest in 1651, the friars were temporarily expelled but returned to reclaim their residence at Athlunkard Street and Nicholas Street. In 1782, they moved to Newgate Lane, where a new chapel and friary were built. This site now houses the Limerick Museum.
