Franklin Square, Philadelphia
Franklin Square, located in the Center City area of Philadelphia, holds a significant place in the city's history and urban landscape. As one of the five original open-space parks envisioned by William Penn in 1682, this green space is situated between North 6th and 7th Streets, and Race Street and the Vine Street Expressway. Penn included this area in his original city plan, intending it to be a place for settlers to reflect and demonstrate virtuous behavior, thereby understanding the value of nature.
However, the development of Franklin Square was initially slow, hindered by its marshy terrain. Despite its initial purpose as a contemplative green space, the park's character changed dramatically over time. By the 1920s, it had been largely abandoned, and the surrounding area, known locally as the "tenderloin," became notorious for its entertainment district characterized by taverns and bordellos.
The transformation of Franklin Square began in 2003, spearheaded by Historic Philadelphia, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to the park's revitalization. Through their efforts, the park underwent significant renovations, including the addition of commercial spaces and housing to attract tourists. These changes helped restore the park to its original vision, aligning with William Penn's intention for it to be a space of natural beauty and public enjoyment.
Today, Franklin Square is a lively and family-friendly place to visit, with various attractions set in a revitalized natural environment. At the center of Franklin Square, there's a beautiful fountain with a long history dating back to 1838. This picturesque landmark is surrounded by numerous amenities designed to meet the needs of those who come to enjoy Franklin Square.
In recognition of its historical significance, Franklin Square was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1981, cementing its status as an integral piece of Philadelphia's storied past.
