Funicular, Kiev
Kiev's funicular is an electrical tram which climbs 238 metres up and down along a 36 degree slope between the Podol district at the bottom and Mikhailovskaya Square at the top. The funicular flight is quite comfortable from a transportation standpoint, and is also great in terms of sightseeing. The journey takes only three minutes and costs no more than a regular public transportation fare in Kiev. There are two trams running three minutes apart.
The funicular was built in 1902-1905 as part of the project developed by Arthur Abrahamson. The funicular stations were designed by N. Piatnitskiy, and the railway tracks were engineered by N. Barishnikov. The service was launched on May 5th, 1905 with over 22,000 people going for a ride on the opening day.
In later years, the funicular endured several repairs and restorations, including those in 1928, 1958, 1984, and the latest one in September 2006. Today, the funicular is used daily by 10 to 15 thousand people, with the annual passenger turnover exceeding 2.8 million.
