Galerie Bab Rouah, Rabat
Bab Rouah is one of the most remarkable architectural and artistic landmarks in Rabat. Known as the "Gate of the Winds," this monumental gate was constructed in 1197 by the Almohad caliph Ya'qub al-Mansur as part of his grand vision for the city. As the largest and most ornately decorated of Rabat’s five historical gates, Bab Rouah stands as a testament to the grandeur of Almohad architecture.
This massive structure, measuring 28 meters in length, 27 meters in depth, and 12 meters in height, features an imposing entrance with rich geometric and arabesque ornamentation. The gate provides access to an interior space composed of four square rooms, each measuring 5.65 meters per side, connected by two vestibules of 4.2 by 2.2 meters. Originally serving as a defensive stronghold, Bab Rouah transformed in the 20th century, evolving into a cultural and artistic venue.
In the early 1960s, Bab Rouah was repurposed as an art gallery, offering a unique fusion of historical grandeur and contemporary creativity. The first major restoration tailored to its new function occurred in 1986, followed by a significant renovation by the Ministry of Culture between 2001 and 2002. Since its reopening in April 2002, Galerie Bab Rouah has continued to host national and international exhibitions, showcasing works by renowned Moroccan artists such as Farid Belkahia, Hassan Glaoui, and Labied Miloud.
Today, the gallery remains a vibrant cultural hub in Rabat, drawing art enthusiasts and visitors eager to experience the intersection of history and modern artistic expression. Whether admired for its architectural splendor or its dynamic exhibitions, Bab Rouah continues to be a symbol of Rabat’s rich artistic heritage.
