Gambir Railway Station, Jakarta
Gambir Railway Station, located in Jakarta, is a major railway hub with historical significance. Constructed during the Dutch East Indies era, the station underwent significant renovations in the 1990s to modernize its facilities.
As a pivotal point in Indonesia’s railway network, Gambir Station primarily serves as a terminus for intercity trains traversing Java Island. Although the station does not currently accommodate stops for the KRL Commuterline Bogor Line, which connects Jakarta to Bogor, there are considerations to reintroduce this service to meet the demands of high passenger traffic from nearby commuter stations like Gondangdia and Juanda.
Historically, Gambir Station catered exclusively to executive and business-class services. However, around 2016, the national railway company KAI initiated the inclusion of upgraded economy class coaches on routes traditionally reserved for higher classes, such as the Argo Parahyangan service. This shift aligns with broader trends in rail service enhancement and the phasing out of dedicated business class trains.
The station building spans three levels: the first floor houses shops, restaurants, ticket counters, and a ticket-checking post; the second floor serves as a waiting area with food vendors and retail outlets; and the third floor manages departure and arrival operations with platforms and tracks.
Additional facilities at Gambir Station include an ATM Center, comprehensive restroom facilities, public telephones, and elevators that provide accessibility across all floors. The station also supports a taxi pool located on the east side, facilitating easy onward travel for passengers. These features make Gambir Station not only a critical node in the Indonesian rail network but also a well-equipped transportation hub in Jakarta.
