Gamlehaugen, Bergen

Gamlehaugen, Bergen

Gamlehaugen, located in Bergen, serves as the King’s official residence in the city. This historical property is nestled near Troldhaugen, the residence of Edvard Grieg, the famous Norwegian composer. Originally purchased by Christian Michelsen, a notable shipowner and statesman, in 1898, Gamlehaugen's construction was completed around the turn of the 20th century.

Michelsen, who played a pivotal role as Norway’s prime minister during the 1905 dissolution of the union with Sweden, lived here until he died in 1925. Following his death, a national fundraising campaign led to the creation of a trust to preserve Gamlehaugen, which was subsequently acquired by the state. The ground-floor state rooms are open to the public each summer, offering a glimpse into Norway’s rich history.

Designed by Jens Zetlitz Monrad Kielland in 1899, the architecture of Gamlehaugen combines elements from the robust fortresses of Scotland and the ornate castles of France’s Loire Valley, particularly those from the 16th century. However, Kielland infused these historical influences with modern touches reflective of the Art Nouveau style prevalent during his time. This architectural marriage creates a stunning visual contrast, especially apparent to visitors who experience the majestic exterior and then discover the distinctly Norwegian decorations inside that recapture Norway's medieval splendor.

The interior features a grand two-story hall, surrounded by elaborate decor styles including Rococo, Neo-Renaissance, Dutch Baroque, and Neo-Baroque. The house also houses a music room, library, and a winter garden, providing a rich tapestry of cultural and historical contexts. The property is also known for its beautifully landscaped English-style park, a haven of diverse flora, and popular with the public for activities like swimming and walking.

Gamlehaugen not only functions as a royal residence but also stands as a testament to Norway’s architectural and historical evolution, embodying the spirit of the nation during a transformative era.

It is a wonder Bergen has had so many fires in its history, considering it has averaged 200 days a year of rain. So, why the fires?

Flames leapt across the narrow streets. The compact wooden buildings were easy prey. In 1702 90% of the city was destroyed. Disasters continued through the years. Finally, in 1916, a new idea in prevention emerged. The way to stop a fire was to starve it.

Bergen's Architectural Jewels

Surprising as it may appear, but the seemingly small city of Bergen for centuries had been the largest in all of the Nordic countries. It also remained so for Norway until the 1830s. Apart from being the country's former capital (back in the 13th century), Bergen is well-known primarily for its astoundingly beautiful cityscape, formed by the backdrop of mountains and serene waterfront, much...  view more
