Gandhi Smriti Museum, Delhi (must see)
Gandhi Smriti stands as the place where Mahatma Gandhi spent the final 144 days of his life and tragically met his assassination on January 30, 1948. Originally owned by the prominent Indian business family, the Birlas, it currently houses the Eternal Gandhi Multimedia Museum, established in 2005.
After extensive and challenging negotiations, the Government of India acquired the 12-bedroom house in 1971, and two years later, it was opened to the public under the name Gandhi Smriti, meaning 'Gandhi Remembrance.' The museum within the premises holds a diverse collection of articles connected to Gandhi's life and demise, along with murals depicting significant scenes from his extraordinary journey.
Visitors have the opportunity to explore the building and its surrounding grounds, witnessing the preserved room where Gandhi resided and the spot on the grounds where he was tragically shot during his nightly public walk while engaged in prayers. This spot is now marked by the Martyr's Column, a somber reminder of the sacrifice made by the great man.
Why You Should Visit:
Both the house and the grounds have a wonderful gentle feel about them and the overall experience feels respectful rather than tacky.
The assassination site is iconic, and you really feel you are in a place where important history happened.
