Gastorget (Goose Square), Stockholm

Goose Square (Gåstorget) is a charming public square situated in the historic old town of Stockholm. This quaint square is nestled between the alleys Överskärargränd and Gåsgränd and serves as a delightful spot for visitors to explore while on a walking tour of the Old Town.

The origins of Gåstorget date back to 1730 when Johan Eberhard Carlberg, a city engineer, proposed creating spaces for horse-drawn vehicles to facilitate fire fighting across the city. By 1796, such a space was established at the current location of Gåstorget, initially referred to informally as Gåsplan or "Goose Plain." Despite a 1981 proposal to rename the square after the troubadour Evert Taube, the original name was retained and made official.

One of the square's notable features is the bronze sculpture "Tungviktare" or "Heavyweights," created by sculptor Sven Lundqvist in 1967. This one-meter-tall sculpture, set on a granite base, depicts two boxers surrounded by an audience of onlookers, adding a unique artistic touch to the area.

The Goose Square is surrounded by lush greenery and ivy-covered buildings, contributing to its picturesque ambiance. The square is lined with various craftsmen's shops, taverns, and cafes, making it an ideal spot for strolls, relaxing on benches, or enjoying a coffee at a nearby cafe. The combination of historical significance, artistic elements, and serene surroundings makes the Goose Square a must-visit location in Stockholm's Gamla Stan.
