Gerrard Street Baptist Church, Aberdeen
Gerrard Street Baptist Church, located in Aberdeen, is an integral part of the city’s religious landscape and is affiliated with the Baptist Union of Scotland. The current church building opened in 1900 and replaced an earlier structure from 1844 that originally housed the congregation of the John Knox Free Church following the Disruption of 1843. The new, more spacious building was constructed to accommodate the growing congregation.
The church is a Category B listed building, recognized for its historical significance, architectural contribution to the streetscape, and connection to the parish of John Knox. The adjoining church hall, predating the current church, was built on the site of one of the original school buildings. Its Gothic style contrasts with the classical design of the main church.
Inside, the church once featured an organ in the chancel area, which has since been replaced by a baptismal pool. The rear of the church still retains a fragment of a granite wall, a relic of an old rope walk from before 1828.
Today, the church plays an active role in the community, particularly through its student ministry, which hosts small weekly prayer and Bible study groups. Services are held on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., with communion observed on the first Sunday morning and the third Sunday evening of each month.
