Giardini Margherita (Margherita Gardens), Bologna
The ultimate spot for picnics in Bologna is none other than the Margherita Gardens, located just beyond the southern city walls, a brief stroll from the heart of the Old City. This gem isn't just green – it's spacious, leafy, and offers ample room for walking, jogging, playing ball, or simply unwinding in the shade. As Bologna's largest park, spanning 26 hectares, it has its fair share of wide pathways and a picturesque pond teeming with fish and turtles. To top it off, there's a nice cafeteria where you can savor drinks or snacks by the water's edge.
Originally named Passeggio Regina Margherita when it opened its gates in 1879, the gardens have retained much of their original charm, drawing inspiration from English Romantic parks. During their creation, an unexpected treasure was unearthed – an Etruscan burial ground, with the magnificent travertine grave at the side of the central lawn. On the southern side of the pond, a short section of the ancient Savena canal (dating back to 1176) is on display, offering a glimpse into the city's rich waterway history.
