Giardino Elisa (Elisa Garden), Lucca

Giardino Elisa (Elisa Garden), Lucca

The Elisa Garden, located in the historic center of Lucca, is a unique green space that traces its origins back to the early 19th century. Approved as a project on June 23, 1812, the garden was conceived alongside the new Elisa Street (Via Elisa) to bring a touch of Parisian elegance to Lucca. Its creators sought to emulate the ambiance of Rivoli Street (Rue de Rivoli) in Paris, offering a delightful retreat for Duchess Elisa Baciocchi.

Occupying a long and narrow triangular-shaped area, the garden complements the nearby Froussard Palace, now known as Palazzo Sodini. Enclosed by a high wall with no external openings, the garden presents an intimate and secluded atmosphere. Originally, the layout of the flowerbeds aligned with the curvilinear facade of the palace, creating a symmetrical perspective. Over time, however, modifications altered this relationship, transitioning the garden into a more organically structured space.

Today, the garden is traversed by a primary pathway running along the eastern wall, from which smaller paths branch off. A central rest area features a mixtilinear pool, adding a focal point to the design. The garden's botanical collection has grown extensively over the centuries, evolving from its initial, rigid selection to a more diverse array of species. Notable trees include a large Lebanese cedar, two magnolias, a holm oak, various shrubs, bushes, and laurel hedges.

The final section of the garden is elevated, with a series of steps adorned by laurel hedges that act as a "green handrail," subtly guiding visitors through the space. The interplay of greenery and pathways creates a serene retreat within Lucca’s historic landscape, offering a glimpse into the city’s past while serving as a tranquil haven for those who visit.
