Gibran Khalil Gibran Garden, Beirut

Gibran Khalil Gibran Garden, Beirut

The Gibran Khalil Gibran Garden is a serene 6,000-square-meter public garden located in the Centre Ville area of Beirut. Directly facing the UN House, the headquarters of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), this garden serves as both a tribute to and a peaceful refuge in the bustling city center.

Dedicated to the memory of the Lebanese-American writer, poet, and visual artist Kahlil Gibran, who is best known for his book "The Prophet," the garden reflects his philosophical and artistic legacy. Among the garden’s notable features are two circular lawns, a series of six obelisks, and various modern sculptures that enhance the aesthetic and cultural value of the space. Notable among these sculptures are works by Lebanese artist Saloua Raouda Choucair and a prominent bust of Gibran himself, crafted by Rudy Rahmé.

In addition to its artistic elements, the garden boasts formal landscaping that highlights its role as a major gateway to downtown Beirut. It includes a water cascade, comfortable benches, and ample greenery, making it a favored spot for relaxation, especially on weekend mornings. The presence of trees and a fountain adds to the tranquil atmosphere, providing a lush contrast to the surrounding urban environment.

Despite its proximity to important administrative buildings like the UN-ESCWA, the Gibran Khalil Gibran Garden faces security measures such as photography restrictions and an obscured entrance behind a large cement wall. Yet, it remains a favored spot for peaceful gatherings, embodying cultural significance and public engagement in downtown Beirut.
