Gold Reef City, Johannesburg (must see)
Gold Reef City, situated in Johannesburg, is an amusement park that occupies the grounds of a former gold mine that ceased operations in 1971. The park's thematic focus centers on the historical gold rush that commenced in 1886 within the Witwatersrand region. The architectural design of the park's structures authentically reflects the aesthetics of that era. Visitors have the opportunity to explore a dedicated gold mining museum on the premises, where they can observe a gold-bearing ore vein and witness the process of gold being poured into barrels. Additionally, various shops are scattered throughout the park for visitors to explore.
Gold Reef City boasts a wide array of attractions, encompassing water rides, roller coasters, and the renowned Gold Reef City Casino. Situated to the south of the Central Business District, just off the M1 highway, it also serves as the location for the Apartheid Museum.
Why You Should Visit:
The whole area is really good for a full day out: museum, theme park, then the Casino which also has many restaurants, a cinema & theater, and even a kids area.
Tip:
For the water rides – you're going to get wet, so a spare set of clothes (especially for the little ones) is highly recommended.
Some days are really crowded, so book online and go early if you can.
