Gösting Castle ruine, Graz

Gösting Castle, situated in the 13th district of Graz, stands as a reminder of the medieval era in the region. This castle, now in ruins, once held a significant position in Gösting, on the northwest outskirts of Graz, controlling the strategic Mura valley to the north. This valley served as a crucial route into the Graz basin, vital for managing trade and transportation to and from Graz. Despite its dilapidated condition, Gösting Castle remains a beloved attraction, offering stunning panoramic views of the Graz basin and the picturesque hills of eastern Styria from its perch 200 meters above the city.

The history of Gösting Castle dates back to the 11th century, with its first documented mention in 1042. Over the centuries, it underwent several expansions, notably in the 15th century when it was fortified into a fortress. This fortification was essential for defense against threats from the Turks and Hungarians, and the castle played a crucial role in a signaling fire system designed to warn the populace during times of danger.

In 1707, the castle came under the ownership of the Counts of Attems. However, tragedy struck on July 10, 1723, when lightning ignited the gunpowder magazine, causing a devastating fire that consumed a significant portion of the castle. Instead of rebuilding, the Attems family established a new residence at the Baroque Schloss Gösting (Neugösting) at the foot of the mountain, completed in 1728.

The ruin and its surrounding woodlands came under the ownership of the Auer family, notable bakers, in 1999. The maintenance of the site falls under the responsibility of a castle foundation established in 1925, ensuring its preservation for future generations.

Today, visitors to the castle ruins can explore the chapel, the keep, and the remnants of its walls. A tower within the ruins has been repurposed into a museum, offering historical insights to enhance the visitor experience. Additionally, a tavern provides refreshments and a place to rest. Accessible by a 30-minute walk from Schlossplatz in Gösting, the ruins of Gösting Castle serve as a poignant symbol of Graz's rich historical heritage, inviting exploration and contemplation.
