Grace North Church, Berkeley
Grace North Church, at the corner of Cedar and Walnut in Berkeley, is a testament to resilience and architectural charm. Designed in 1913 by James W. Plachek, who was just 29 at the time, this was the architect’s first major commission in Berkeley. Plachek, who later became renowned for designing the Berkeley Public Library and other notable structures, crafted the church in a style reminiscent of Arts and Crafts-era homes, earning it the affectionate nickname “Berkeley Bungalow Church.”
Founded in 1892, the parish has weathered over a century of societal shifts and even the devastating 1923 Berkeley Fire, which destroyed nearly half its parishioners’ homes but miraculously spared the church itself. The parish embraced a fresh identity in 1995, reincorporating as Grace North Church while continuing to foster its rich community traditions.
The building itself stands out with its non-traditional design, featuring four stately columns, expansive windows, and a distinctive roofline, making it a landmark on Cedar Street. Sharing its space with the North Berkeley Congregational Church, Grace North offers a unique blend of historical significance and spiritual inclusivity.
One of the church's most cherished traditions is the monthly Interfaith Labyrinth Walk, held in the Labyrinth Hall on the last Friday of each month from January through October. This free-form service is an enchanting experience, with the labyrinth lit by 97 candles and a band playing chants inspired by world religions. Attendees are invited to pray, meditate, sing, or simply walk the labyrinth in a serene and open atmosphere—a reflection of the church’s dedication to fostering community and interfaith dialogue.
