Grand Indonesia, Jakarta (must see)
Grand Indonesia is a prominent integrated multipurpose complex situated in Jakarta. Previously known as Grand Indonesia Shopping Town until 2016, this vast complex spans approximately 640,000 square meters (6,900,000 square feet). It comprises several key components: a vast shopping mall, the Menara BCA office tower, the upscale Kempinski Residences, and the luxurious five-star Hotel Indonesia Kempinski. Located near the Selamat Datang Monument, this complex is a central fixture in Jakarta's urban landscape. In January 2017, Grand Indonesia was recognized by Forbes as one of the top five shopping malls in Jakarta, underscoring its significance in the region's retail sector.
One of the mall's unique attractions is the "Dancing Fountain," a musical fountain show held in the Fountain Atrium located in the West Mall on levels 3A and 5. Originally called "Fountain Show", the performance was inspired by New York City's Rockefeller Center. The Dancing Fountain plays a variety of musical pieces including "Theme From New York, New York," Andrew Lloyd Webber Medley, and "Rhapsody In Blue." Seasonal tunes such as Trans Siberian Orchestra Christmas and Sleigh Ride are featured from November to January. Shows are scheduled every three hours on weekends and public holidays at 2 PM, 5 PM, and 8 PM. The fountain technology, provided by Waltzing Waters from Florida, USA, employs a 9-section model system, distinguishing it as the only installation of its kind in Indonesia.
The Fountain Atrium not only houses the Dancing Fountain but also serves as a venue for exhibitions, events, and concerts. Designed to evoke the ambiance of Rockefeller Center and New York streets, the atrium features ceiling art depicting New York architecture and a replica of the iconic Prometheus Rockefeller statue, although the statue was removed in 2019 to make way for a larger LED screen. Over time, changes such as the replacement of the projector screen with a long LED screen by Ilumin8 in 2011, and the construction of a new food court called Foodprint in 2017, have altered the original New York-themed atmosphere of the atrium.
