Graves Park, Sheffield

Graves Park, Sheffield

Graves Park, located south of Sheffield, is the city's largest park spanning 100.362 hectares (248 acres). It is situated between the districts of Norton, Woodseats, and Meadowhead. The park was developed by Alderman J.G. Graves between 1926 and 1936 to protect ancient woodland, some of which is over a thousand years old, from building development. Graves generously donated the park to the city, ensuring its preservation for public enjoyment.

The park features a diverse landscape, comprising open green spaces, mature woodland, and several streams, along with three small lakes surrounded by mature trees. A notable attraction within the park is the Graves Park Animal Farm, located in the northeast. This farm is home to rare breeds of cattle, pigs, chickens, donkeys, and other animals, including Tamworth pigs, Highland cattle, and Jacob sheep, allowing visitors to interact closely with these animals.

Graves Park also offers a variety of recreational facilities. Near the Charles Ashmore Road entrance, there is a practice golf course, two bowling greens, and several hard tennis courts. The north side of the park features a large open area with two cricket pitches and around ten football pitches, which are frequently used by the public, especially for the Sheffield and District Junior Sunday League.

In addition to its sports facilities, the park is equipped with two children's playgrounds and a café, making it a popular destination for families and visitors seeking leisure and outdoor activities. Overall, Graves Park serves as a vital green space in Sheffield, offering a blend of nature conservation, recreation, and community engagement.
