Haas-Lilienthal House, San Francisco

Haas-Lilienthal House, San Francisco

Situated on Franklin Street within San Francisco's Pacific Heights neighborhood, the Haas–Lilienthal House stands as a testament to history. Constructed in 1886 for William and Bertha Haas, this remarkable building withstood the devastating 1906 San Francisco earthquake and subsequent fire. The house showcases the exquisite Victorian Queen Anne - Eastlake architectural style.

Crafted from redwood, the house adopts the locally favored row-house design, cleverly utilizing space on the narrow hillside lots. Its significance extends beyond its physical presence, as the Haas–Lilienthal House holds the esteemed distinction of being a San Francisco Designated Landmark and is proudly listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.

Since 1972, the Haas–Lilienthal House has warmly welcomed the public, offering engaging tours. It is a rarity among the city's private Victorian homes, as it opens its doors regularly as a museum, featuring its original furniture and precious artifacts. Knowledgeable volunteer docents enthusiastically guide visitors through the house, commencing their journey in the basement ballroom.

The tour encompasses the first floor, showcasing the original principal bedchamber, another bedchamber, a nursery, and a bathroom on the second floor. While the third story, the attic, once a spacious redwood-paneled playroom, gym, storage room, and servants’ quarters, now serves as the headquarters for Heritage and the residence of the house manager.
