Haifa War Cemetry, Haifa
The Haifa War Cemetery, located near Saint Gabriel church in Haifa, holds a significant historical legacy linked to British soldiers who lost their lives during World War II. Initially part of a German cemetery established in 1918, it has transformed over time into a solemn tribute to those who fought and died on Israeli soil during the global conflict.
During World War II, Haifa's strategic importance was evident due to its deep-water harbor and airfield, making it a crucial logistical center. The city served as a key supply base and arms depot for Middle East forces, with a significant naval presence in Haifa Bay. The cemetery was used for burials in the early stages of the war, mainly for hospital deaths, and some graves were relocated from battlefields. Later, a new war cemetery was established at Khayat Beach.
Today, the Haifa War Cemetery is the final resting place for 305 Commonwealth soldiers from World War I, including 86 unidentified individuals, and 36 from World War II. It serves as a solemn reminder of the human cost of war and the sacrifices made for future generations.
Initially, not all graves were marked with headstones. The cemetery also honors 110 members of the Egyptian Labour Corps, whose exact burial sites are unknown, through a numerical commemoration on a screen wall. Efforts are ongoing to identify these individuals by name, ensuring they receive proper recognition. These efforts reflect a continued commitment to honoring the memory of those who served and sacrificed, preserving their stories for future generations.
