Hajjah Fatimah Mosque, Singapore
Masjid Hajjah Fatimah is a mosque situated on Beach Road in the Kampong Glam district of Singapore's Kallang Planning Area. Its construction was completed in 1846, and the mosque exhibits a unique blend of local Islamic and European architectural elements. It was designed by the colonial architect John Turnbull Thomson and bears the name of its generous benefactor, a lady named Hajjah Fatimah.
The mosque's compound is enclosed by a substantial wall and includes various components, such as a prayer hall, a mausoleum, living quarters for an Imam, an ablution area, multiple annexes, and a garden. One of its standout features is an unconventional minaret, the design of which remains attributed to an unidentified European architect. Notably, this minaret tilts about six degrees off-center, aligning itself with Mecca. The prayer hall itself is set at an angle to the street grid and is enveloped by verandahs on three sides. In the 1930s, architects Chung & Wong revamped the hall's design, with the construction work carried out by French contractors Bossard & Mopin.
The building's facade comprises five bays, with the central bay, flanked by miniature minarets, serving as the entrance. Above the facade, a prominent onion dome with 12 lancet windows, featuring yellow and green stained glass, rises gracefully. Inside the prayer hall, you can observe the dome's 16 ribbed sections, adding to the mosque's architectural charm.
