Halls, Kansas City
Halls is a specialty department store division of Hallmark Cards, located in the Crown Center commercial complex in downtown Kansas City. Originally founded in 1916 by Joyce C. Hall, the creator of Hallmark, Halls began as a small showcase in a Kansas City lobby and has grown into a prestigious shopping destination known for its premium offerings in apparel, cosmetics, jewelry, and more. The store's reputation rivals that of luxury retailers like Bloomingdale's and Neiman Marcus.
Hall's journey started with a move to Grand Avenue in 1950, where it solidified its reputation for high-quality gifts. In 1965, it expanded to a lavish 55,000-square-foot space on the upscale Country Club Plaza, before relocating in 1973 to the Crown Center as part of a downtown revitalization effort. By 2013, Halls consolidated its operations into a single 60,000-square-foot location at Crown Center, which opened in 2014. However, changing consumer preferences led to downsizing and remodeling in 2020, reducing the store's footprint by 12,000 square feet and refocusing its product offerings, with the newly sized store reopening in March 2021.
Today, Halls continues to offer an exclusive range of premium brands in both men's and women's apparel, along with a bridal registry, corporate gift services, and custom-tailoring. An in-store Hallmark Gold Crown shop complements the upscale shopping experience. Beyond retail, Halls has been a dedicated sponsor of various local humanitarian organizations, supporting health care, fine arts, public broadcasting, and other community interests across greater Kansas City.
