Hang Kasturi's Mausoleum, Melaka
Hang Kasturi's Mausoleum in Malacca is believed to be the final resting place of Hang Kasturi, one of the legendary five brothers-in-arms who served Sultan Mansor Shah of Malacca during the 15th century. These five companions, Hang Tuah, Hang Jebat, Hang Kasturi, Hang Lekir, and Hang Lekiu, were renowned for their bravery and martial skills, serving as bodyguards and retainers to the Sultan. However, their loyalty and friendship were marred by palace intrigues, jealousy, and betrayal, leading to tragic confrontations.
According to the Malay Annals, Hang Kasturi was assigned the task of killing Hang Tuah, who had been accused of involvement with the Sultan's concubines. However, Hang Tuah discovered the plot and killed Hang Kasturi instead, along with Hang Jebat, the true traitor. Despite the ignominy of their actions, both Hang Kasturi and Hang Jebat were honored with elaborate graves.
Hang Kasturi's tomb, over 550 years old, is located behind a decorative gateway inscribed with "Makam Hang Kasturi" in Jawi script. The grave is two-tiered and flanked by eight short pillars, each adorned with a triangle motif. The mausoleum is surrounded by historic Straits Chinese buildings, with the entrance of the Hui Kuan or Hokkien merchants' guild facing it, showcasing beautiful stone carvings.
Visitors can learn more about Hang Kasturi and his companions' exploits at the Hang Tuah Centre in Kampung Duyong on the outskirts of Melaka City. Despite the controversies surrounding their lives, the mausoleum of Hang Kasturi remains a significant historical site, reflecting the rich and complex history of Melaka during the 15th century.
